What is DEF?

DEF is designed for use in diesel engines equipped with SCR technology. When DEF is injected into the exhaust system of an SCR-equipped diesel engine, it reacts with the catalytic converter to break down NOx molecules into harmless nitrogen and water.

DEF is a colorless, non-flammable, non-toxic, odorless solution that is safe for people, equipment, and
the environment. High-purity DEF is becoming increasingly available in the U.S. from companies like AirGas, which supplies ultra-pure AirGas AiRx DEF.

SCR Technology

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is the leading emission reduction technology available for diesel engines. SCR systems use a catalytic converter with added DEF to reduce NOx emissions.

DEF is not a fuel additive, but a completely separate solution that resides in its own tank. First, it is injected directly into the exhaust stream, where it is then vaporized by a catalyst to form ammonia. From there, the ammonia works in conjunction with the SCR catalytic converter to convert harmful NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water.

Automotive Grade Urea

Automotive Grade Urea is a special, uncoated version of the highest purity. It is the main component of urea solutions such as Diesel
Exhaust Fluid or AUS40/45, which are used in SCR systems for their NOx reduction properties.

This is the only type of urea that meets the requirements of ISO 22241 and the only suitable type of urea for the production of DEF/AUS32/ARLA32 solutions. To meet the ISO22241 standard, urea must be of the highest purity/quality.
